Robert and his love of swimming
February 2016
Robert, a 16 year old boy with a mild to moderate relatively symmetric pectus carinatum deformity before and 12 weeks after starting a bracing program. As a keen swimmer, he was able to start back in the pool training a couple of hours each week with the brace off after the initial 6 weeks bracing period.
I am very happy with the results of the pectus bracing, before I started the bracing I was a bit worried about the possible impacts that it may have on my swimming as it meant a while out of the water and that it might change the way that I swim. After about 6 weeks Ian and Joe said that it would be okay for me to take my brace off for a couple hours a week so that I could swim. This meant that I didn't have that much time out of the water and so didn't loose too much fitness. Within six months I was able to get back into the pool for my regular 5 times a week swimming training. There was also no noticeable changes in my technique or my swimming style after my bracing programme. For me the improvement in my chest shape was worth the time out of the water.
