James's story - ' turned away'

When James was an early adolescent, we were turned away by our GP who told us that his chest was normal and not to worry about it.

From that point on he has kept his chest covered. Over the subsequent years his motivation for school, his future and having a social life, have shrunk. My husband and I thought that this was perhaps typical teenage withdrawal and a normal reluctance to communicate which would pass. We now know that his behaviors have arisen from his real concerns about the acceptability of the appearance of his chest. His symptoms are emotional ones.

Thank you for your help.
