"Worth it in the end"
Fae, an 18 year old female with a severe asymmetric pectus excavatum deformity with Chest CT demonstrating severity of deformity prior to Nuss procedure. She struggled with pain after surgery and ended up being in hospital longer than she expected, but feels it was worth it in the end.
I first went to see a GP about my pectus at 14 when possible health risks were brought to my attention. After being told there were no immediate health risks but the cosmetic Nuss procedure was available, I originally decided against it. Then at 16, when I started to develop and I became more and more self-conscious – never leaving the house without at least three layers – I decided to go through with having a Nuss procedure. A year later I was checking into hospital for surgery, aware of the risks but ready to fix my 'deformity'... I ended up in hospital for…. three weeks, absolutely miserable and in more pain [that] I thought possible, wishing I'd never gone through with it. In saying that, 2 ½ years down the line and I don't regret one bit, the change was phenomenal and I can't wait to have my two bars taken out. Fae, aged 19, London, Sept 2016
Post operative chest x-ray from the side (left) and the front (right) with 2 pectus bars in position. Sometimes 2 pectus bars are required to obtain the best cosmetic result.
